Prabal Gurung

New York Fashion Week is now in full swing with designers such as Cynthia Rowley, Jason Wu and Alexander Wang showcasing their designs for A/W 12. Fashion is so fast paced and I still find it difficult to get my head around looking at the Autumn/Winter collections before we've even thought about making it into Spring. However, with so many fabulous creations out there each season, it's also pretty exciting. So far, my favourite show has been Prabal Gurung. Taking influences from the idea of "hell and heaven", Gurung has created a divine collection of clothing mixing textures and colour to create perfect results. The collection starts out with deep blacks with heavy, textured fabrics combined with lighter fabrics with a sheer finish. The collection then moved into a series of lighter blues culminating with a series of gold and pearly whites worthy of the golden gates themselves. Gurung also used a mixture of interesting shapes that combined linea with curve and minimal with dramatic to create interesting results.
The thoughts of many is with the Mayan Calender which predicts that 2012 will be the end of the world; perhaps this was in the mind of Prabal Gurung when he was conjuring up this collection. With the finale looks being pure white, silk colomn dresses, it appears, in the end, Gurung settled on salvation.
